McKindness

Talkin' bout my generation.

So my co-worker and I go to McDonald's for lunch. And right when we walk in we notice that a homeless person is there. (the signs are obvious and we play a chess game of trying to check his out without being checked out ourselves) So we get our food and sit down and start discussing other things when we hear this small-ish voice say, "Hello. Did you eat anything today?"

It's a 10-or-so-year-old kid talking to the homeless man. The man is just as astonished as we are and the kid goes on to say, "Do you want any McDonald's?" The man nods and the kid continues, "A cheeseburger and fries?" More nodding. "And a drink?" And with that he goes to the front and with is mom's money orders the food. Granted that his mom is there the kid still did all the talking. Jeff (the aforementioned friend) and I look at each other as if to say, "who is this kid? McAulley Caulkin talking to the scary neighbor in Home Alone?".

I say, "wow." Jeff says, "he did better than I'd do".

And it's true. I've done my share of good deeds but yesterday wasn't one of those days. I just saw the homeless man and thought, "wonder how long he's been hanging out here" not "I bet he's hungry".

I fear not the younger generation.
