And The Most Popular Is ...
I watched about 43 seconds of the Oscars last night and that's all. That has to be the least amount I've watched since I was a kid. Now...Lemme explain why.....
Up until 3 years ago, I thought the Oscar's had a semblance of dignity. The Grammy' are obviously devoid of common sense -- with the Aqualung Heavy Metal awards and the Milli Vanilli incidents, not to mention that every new artist is basically cursed to oblivion -- so I thought the last bastion of decency could come from a bunch of millionaires picking the best performance of the year.
Wrong.
Tom Hanks lost in 2001 for Castaway to Russel Crowe in Gladiator. Tom had to talk to a volleyball for 3 hours, loose 50 pounds, cry, laugh, and do all the things that make an award winning performance. Russel had to wear metal shirts and swing a sword.
Russel won.
Why?
Because Tom would have been only of the elite few to have 3 Oscars for Best Actor. I think Jack Nicholson is the only other. So he was snubbed to keep Jack up and that kid from Bussom Buddies and The Money Pit down.
The next year, Russel actually has a good performance in A Beautiful Mind where he has to cover generations, act crazy and go nuts.
Does he win?
No.
Why?
Because he won last year. Who did win? Denzel Washington.
Why? Probably because as they were voting for Hale Berry they said to themselves..."why not Denzel too?"
It should never be a question of history when you fill out a ballot. You can't say that someone won last year or that it's time we had a black, puerto rican, handicapped, or ugly winner. You can't say that someone should win for their body of work. You choose the best performance. That's it.
I watched basketball instead.
